Hugh is a 40 + year veteran of acoustic Americana music arranging and performance along with audio and video recording production and engineering.

His first effort was with J.D.Crowe, Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Bob Slone and Jerry Douglas “The New South” in 1974-75 that produced “The Old Home Place” project (Rounder 044). Later projects include work with Ricky Skaggs and Boone Creek along with Glenn Lawson, Bella Fleck, Mark Shatz and Jim Gaudreau and their band Spectrum.

Hugh’s focus shifted from touring Bluegrass Bands to the avocational musical pursuits of a number of world-class music performers in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. His move to Deep Gap, NC in 1981 opened the door to real blue-eyed soul performers that were great fun to work with and they offered an authenticity he previously had found hard to find.

The Mountain Music Machine evolved from Hugh’s work in the studio and on stage with these folks and their talent and performance skills will stand up with any available anywhere.

Our show is unique in many ways but most of all it is based on genuine love of the music we perform, not necessarily the revenue produced from these efforts given the fact we make our living in other pursuits..
